The Next-Generation Fabric for HPC

Intel's Omni-Path Architecture (OPA) is the latest generation of fiber interconnect architecture and the successor to the Intel True Scale Fabric.

Intel OPA delivers the performance for tomorrow's high performance computing (HPC) workloads and the ability to scale to tens of thousands of nodes—and eventually more—at a price competitive with today’s fabrics. With increases in total bandwidfth from 40GB/s to 100GB/s and added performance features designed specifically for HPC, Intel OPA is the ideal fabric used to support clusters of all sizes with optimization for HPC applications at both the host and fabric levels for benefits that are not possible with standard Infiniband-based designs. The entire Intel OPA 100 Series is an end-to-end solution of PCIe adapters, silicon, switches, cables, and management software.

 

Intel OPA Software Components

The Intel OPA host software stack and the Intel® Fabric Suite are the components of Intel® OPA software. Unlike Mellanox software, Intel OPA software including Host software and Fabric Manager are offered for free!

Intel will Open Source all Host Fabric Components such as the Driver, PSM, Libfabric providers, Fabric Manager, FastFabric tools, HFI diags, FM GUI, OFA enhancements: patches, plugins, etc. In addition, host components will be upstreamed to be delivered as a part of the Operating system.

 

Intel OPA Features

Packet Protection

A link-level error checking capability that is applied to all data traversing the wire. It allows for transparent detection and recovery of transmission errors as they occur.

Traffic Flow Optimization

Improves quality of service by allowing higher priority data packets to preempt lower priority packets, regardless of packet ordering. This reduces the variation in latency seen through the network by high priority traffic in the presence of lower priority traffic.

 

Adaptive Routing

Monitors the performance of the possible paths between fabric end-points and selects the least congested path to re-balance the packet load.

Dispersive Routing

Omni-Path Fabric supports a variety of routing methods, including defining alternate routes that disperse traffic flows for redundancy, performance, and load balancing.

Dynamic Lane Scaling

Maintains link continuity in the event of a lane failure. With the help of PIP, Omni-Path uses the remaining lanes in the link to continue operation. This prevents the need to restart or go to a previous checkpoint to keep an application running.
